Malta least likely to be affected by COVID-19?

According to the German ratings agency Scope, Malta is very well placed to cope with the economic consequences of the corona pandemic. The agency rates Malta as the best placed country in the EU in terms of coping economically with COVID-19.

Of the 63 countries evaluated by Scope ratings, Malta rated fifth behind Taiwan, China, Switzerland and Thailand. Scope noted that Malta was strongly positioned with regards to the balance of payments, the financial surplus, low debt to GDP ratio and that government borrowing was from local sources.

The International Monetary Fund also see Malta as the EU country having the least impact from COVID-19.

Recent reports from ratings agencies Fitch, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s also see Malta as having a stable outlook.
